Groups for older people

For older folk who would like to get to know a bit more about the Christian faith, and enjoy good food and great company, we run Good Companions, a lunch and social club, every Wednesday during school terms.

Our age range is from about 70 upwards (our current oldest member is an active 96). We meet from 12.30 – 3.00p.m. Our activities fall in to two main sections:
  1. A cooked meal followed by tea and biscuits.
  2. An afternoon ‘activity’ (usually physically passive!) such as a slide show, quiz, ‘Desert Island Discs’, poetry and music, visiting speakers, etc.

A small but essential part of our programme is the ‘prologue’, five to seven minutes of basic Bible teaching led by either ‘visitors’ from St. Peter’s or the Good Companions leadership. In this we aim to focus on essentials of the Christian faith and commend Jesus to our members.

In each of the Summer and Autumn terms we have a coach outing and on most half-terms we have a coffee morning or afternoon tea.

For those who cannot get out to an evening Small Group, we also run Tuesday at Two, a daytime Small Group ideally suited for older people keen to explore what the Bible means and how it helps us to know Jesus better.
